It was a relief to receive this book - a Christmas gift - and find it to be a full size hardbound book as promised. (We have had some disappointments in the past.) This was the ONLY book to contain the information my husband has been looking for .. something he remembered from college 50 years ago. No other bookstore or library, or even Google, could help us.

I apparently got edition I, with the waterfall on the cover. Appears to be very different from second edition, so I guess I'm on the hook to buy another one. My mistake, probably, but be aware: There's a big difference, don't get the wrong one. If the prof says second edition, be sure you get second edition.

Consider this a review of the entire series, not just this book.The story here is great. It's engaging, entertaining and sometimes shocking. However, there are some problems. In the first few books, it's like reading an outdoors catalog. Nothing is just a hatchet or a water bottle, it's a Gerber hatchet and a Platypus water bottle. He drops brand names like he's paid for product placement. This stops in later books, thankfully.Throughout the entire thing there are numerous spelling, punctuation and grammar issues. In the last book there is a foreword explaining that these issues have been handled and this book will be a smooth read. That isn't the case.The characters are pretty two dimensional, with not much development. There are a few exceptions, but by and large, there isn't much character development.This should be a terrible series of books. The problems listed are usually enough for me to give up halfway through and look for something better, but the story line kept me going, and I'm glad it did. This is a fantastic story, inexpertly written. The author is clearly getting better by the end of Resurrecting Home, but don't expect these to become classics. They're good fun, they're quick reads and they don't demand that you think too hard as a reader. I'd call this a decent vacation read.

I'm not here to recap the book, you can find that elsewhere. I'm here to tell you why you should invest your spare time reading this series. If you've read my review of book one you can skip ahead because I don't really have anything new to say, just want the author to have some honest reviews in return for his hard work putting pen to paper.I read a lot of post-apocalypse fiction. Most writers suck at it. Their scenarios are rather far fetched, their characters are cookie cutter preppers I could never relate to if we were face to face, and the decisions their characters make are so stupid as to put them in deeper jeopardy making their professed prepper status highly questionable and making me hope Darwin got it right so I'll never have to deal with them.A.A.'s characters are well developed, thinking people, even the bad guys. They behave in ways that are true to their back story. Yes, they make mistakes and sometimes those mistakes have unpleasant consequences.As of today, there are maybe 10 or more books in the series. They enter my library as soon as they are released and that's unusual for me because my experience is that when an author pens a series beyond a certain number of books, they seem to reach a point where they're either phoning it in to continue milking the cash cow, or they get so tired of the characters and storyline that they begin to hate what they perceive as a rut. Neither pitfall traps this series.The story arc is such that the plot could run on for another 10 books or more provided the author continues to keep events believable. The characters are not one-note survivalists. They continue to mature and evolve as events unfold.The author isn't afraid to kill off a key character or two and new characters are fleshed out just as well as the ones that survive through everything.In spite of the seriousness of the subject, the author isn't afraid of some comic relief and there are genuine belly laughs spread throughout the series.So far, I've only been mildly disappointed with one book in the series and I believe that's because Weatherman bowed to fan pressure and turned a book out before he should have. If you pick up this series, you'll know which one I'm referring to and I'm sure he does too. When a writer is as social media connected to their fan base as he is, and that base is screaming for the next book, that's hard to ignore but easy to forgive.I hope one day to write this well and have my fans clamoring for the next book.

Absolutely fascinating reading. I read everything A. American writes. I do this because his characters literally jump from the page, and you instantly care for them like family. Also, because it COULD happen. There are great hints and tips on survival (I've actually started purchasing a few things like water filter straws and snap lights, just in case). And, I've always been a food hoard fool. Not to mention I'm a southerner who likes guns and is proficient in their use. As someone once said "First they take your guns"! Don't get the idea I read these wonderful books and intend to start a war! I'm a 70 year old female who loves fiction that MIGHT not be fiction.

I read books 1, 2, 3, and 5 one after the other, semi-ignoring life going on around me over about 7 days.However I am a very fast reader. I skipped very little.In my opinion, these stories could be told as a television series.The most important aspects of these books deals with the loss of just in time food delivery.As a resteraunt owner, for me to earn an income, I need, just in time food delivery.We take the food that we've ordered the night before for granted. As we have for 30 years.Our resteraunt does not do frozen (except for Shrimp).All the United States of America could fall with the simple collapse of of our just in time food delivery.I give A.American kudos for refraining from mentioning who brings America to it's knees.Or, most likely, there are too many to name, that want to bring us to our knees.A.American's stories in his books, give us a realistic glimpse into how things would unfold when people have no food or water in a community away from the cities.Trying to write a book about the loss of food, sewage, water, law enforcement and martial law in a city would be heartbreaking.I recommend reading this series. You will learn a lot.You just may learn things that will save you and you're loved ones life.

I call this a book review, but after I purchased it, I realized it was a novella. Easy read I finished in less than a night.This is a tough review to write because there is so little to say about it. It's vanilla a best. The heroine witnesses a crime, and the criminals see her. They give chase, and she throws herself at a gentleman who, fortunately for her, is a gentleman.They have a budding romance in the course of 2 days on the train in his private car that is convoluted by all sorts of mistrust between both of them. He thinks she's a scam artist, and she's not ready to trust a man she just met.One of the criminals managed to get passage on the same train, and he forces the issues between them as he tries to kill the heroine.Pros1. The steamy scenes are good.2. I liked the hero. He's the white knight that is really my cup of tea. But there is so little to him. Not a lot of depth or character building, and I find that so odd as he was an Ohio farm boy that is now one of the richest men in America. It seems like there should be so much more to him.3. I never liked the heroine, but I never disliked her either.Cons1. The romance just wasn't all that believable to me. I guess falling for someone in two days does that, especially as I could see so little in common between the characters. There was no depth, no connection. But then that might be because the characters were rather flat.2. I liked the peripheral characters of the Webbers probably the best of anyone in the book. Especially Mrs. Webber. That says something.3. I didn't feel like the tension between the characters was all that believable. I can see where he'd think she was a scam artist, but the way he waffles on it back and forth - doesn't seem like the same man that would propose after knowing her for 2 days.4. Odd that she trusts the man enough to sleep in the same train car as him, but not enough to tell him the truth as to why she needs his help

Obviously at 102 pages this was a quick read, but regardless of the length, TYCOON was an excellent read and one I totally enjoyed. Starting it, I hadnâ€™t realized that TYCOON was novella length but the writing was so crisp and dialogs so witty that I just immersed myself to enjoy a great story.Ted Harper was simply minding himself on a train platform when a beautiful young lady rushed up to embrace him and give him a smack on the cheek and talking a mile a minute so that he couldnâ€™t get a word in edgewise!Clara Dawson, shop girl from a department store hadnâ€™t been intending to board a train fleeing from New York but after witnessing her bosses murder by a notorious politician and his police bodyguard who would believe her!The chemistry between Ted the stranger, and Clara was great especially when he offered her a seat in his private car. Heâ€™s everything she ever desired even if a little stiff, but as a very nice bank clerk, she supposed that was how he should be. However as the danger slips in and Clara doesnâ€™t tell him the truth of why sheâ€™s anxious to leave the city, Ted suspects she is just another female trying to ambush him into marriage. By the time he does come to believe her story, will it be too late to see her and lose the one female he has come to adore?Bottom Line: I loved this story, both characters, and great writing! Canâ€™t wait to read more of the Knickerbocker Club!Marilyn Rondeau

The book is much the same as it was when it was first released, and that presents some issues for modern programmers. The first problem is that the book's code requires third party software to create a header with your system specs in order for certain applications to run. That particular software proved to be an issue for me and resulted in a system restore of my laptop.The biggest issue with the text is its reliance on a single, horrifying concoction called the "unp.h" header file and its associated c files. An important rule, especially in teaching material, is not to present more material than what is necessary to convey the intended lesson. In order to understand how the simplest of the programs depicted in the book work, the student must climb an incredible mountain of code in the form of the appendices. The book does nothing to help the student understand the thinking involved in the wrapper functions, which often call other wrapper functions or use other author-defined variables in the unp.h header. The afformentioned header and its associated files take up twelve pages in appendix D. That doesn't sound like much, but when one function's code is calling on another function that appears off the current page and so on, it becomes an issue.For an expert that already knows the ins and outs of Network Programming in C, this is an acceptable resource. As a guide to learning C network programming from the ground up, it is unfortunately less user friendly than it at first appears. However, if the student somehow overcomes the wall that is appendix D, things become smoother. My final verdict: A useful resource that will prove frustrating for beginners.

This is simply the reference book for network programming. For twenty-five years I've relied on it. The descriptions are concise, detailed, and still accurate and the sample code is still viable for starting any networking project. Walk through any engineering office in Silicon Valley and you'll find at least one copy on the bookshelf. Stevens is the Knuth of network programming.

I'm still reading this book, but this is the best one on the subject that I've found - very informative, explains ina very concise, complete and clear way the semantics of the sockets' layer under Unix type OSes. Reading it, theuser will acquire the necessary knowledge, needed to understand the relations between protocol (TCP/IP/SCTP/...) implementation/details and the socket layer functionality.

This is the classic text; what more can be said. For anyone who desires to have a deep understanding of network programming in C, don't do without this text.

Required reading where I work -- and actually clearly, elegantly written. Needs no recommendation from me -- this is the standard work on sockets.

Stevens does it again, great read for anyone involved with unix.

In this cd he discusses how the husband is the head of the home and what that exactly means according to the Bible. He breaks down how a man is to love his wife and to be a godly example for his children. This is an easy read if you purchase the book version. His teaching style is very straight forward. He can also be humors at times throwing in a joke here or there to make his point. I would highly recommend this to all Christian husbands and fathers. If you have a big problem with the traditional Biblical view of family roles and ideas of submission, you may not like his teachings. Yet, he does clear up some common misunderstandings in this area.

This is the best grilling book on the market. I bought it when our son gave us a gas grill in 2006. I just bought a copy for his birthday. Unfortunately, it is out of print, so I bought a second-hand copy. Everything you need to know about grilling (charcoal or gas) is in this book. Beautiful illustrations for many of the recipes. Before you shop for dinner, read the book. I've made grilled vegetables, chicken, and peaches for dinner. Learn to cook properly on the right heat setting. I hope Weber brings back this particular book without any changes. It's perfect.

After years of buying cheapie gas grills only to replace them a couple of years later, I finally splurged on a Weber Spirit 3 burner and couldn't be happier. Read other people's reviews on that grill.Now that I had a killer grill, I wanted a good book of recipes to help me take full advantage of it. After checking reviews of Weber grilling books, I settled on this one and so far I really love it. It has a lot of information about types of meat,poultry and fish in general in addition to the actual recipes. Great photography gets the saliva flowing even before food hits the grill. As I type this, I have two racks of ribs grilling and smoking using one of the recipes from this book.The only thing that keeps me from giving the book an unreserved 5 stars is the terrible index. In many instances you need to find the actual recipe name in order to find it in the index. So for example, you can't look up "steak" and find sub listings. You can't even be more specific and look for "rib-eye steak". I usually just go to the section of the book dealing with the type of meat I have and thumb through it to find a recipe. I've made a half dozen recipes from The Big Book so far, and each has turned out perfectly and been a big hit.

This awesome book is HUGE--9"x 11"x 7/8" thick! Printed on quality paper, it has 416 pages of information, nice recipes, and beautiful full color photos. Not every recipe has a photo, but there are quite a few. This is not just a general cookbook. It appears to be all (or almost all) grilling recipes, PLUS tons of grilling-related information.The beginning pages include the history of grilling, how to choose a grill, grilling tool info, safety in grilling, mastering fire for both direct cooking and indirect cooking, how much charcoal to use, gas grilling, the flavors when using various types of wood, which beers go with which foods, making margaritas, ice tea, and lemonade.Then we begin the recipes! There is a section for sauces, marinades and rubs (recipes and how to use them). Sections follow for different types of meat, seafood, poultry, etc. There is a segment on how to prepare and cook lamb, game (goose, duck), how to truss (tie up) a chicken, and how to neatly cut up a chicken (I did not say "hack"). The fish and seafood section includes how to fillet and grill halibut, shrimp, scallops, mussels, clams, oysters, salmon, a whole trout and others. Recipes like "Lobster Tails with Champagne Vanilla Sauce" make me want to cook right now.There is a segment on vegetable grilling and what to put in salads, with an explanation of the types of greens, reds and whites and a segment on the types of vinegars and oils. The section on grilled desserts includes a recipe for Grilled Pears with Pound Cake and Caramel Sauce, followed by (grilled) Peaches with Raspberry Sauce and Lemon Cream. OMG! If this stuff is even half as good as it sounds. . .If all that doesn't blow you away, at the end of the book, there is an appendix, weights and measures, meat cuts (beef/pork/lamb), grilling guide/chart by type-cut-weight and time for meats, seafood, fruits, vegetables, a 3-page segment on spices and herbs with a description of each and what to use each in, a segment on grill maintenance tips for gas and charcoal grills, and an 8-page alphabetical index.This is one heck of a book! It looks like the author tried to think of everything associated with grilling and put it all in one book. How truly thoughtful for the reader and cook. This book would also make a fantastic gift for someone who likes to grill or maybe for one of those young whipper-snappers who are leaving the nest for the first time.I actually bought this book as a donation to our Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) initiative at work. We are making a grilling basket and raffling it off to raise money for the CFC. Wanna buy a ticket for a buck? :-)

This is best for folks like us with sturdy, dependable kettle grills which we drag out for July 4 weekend, possibly a Labor Day swansong to summer, and then we pack it all away in the garage. It has good, readable instructions and diagrams for setting the thing up, managing hot coals, and cleaning up. The recipes are good in themselves, but are written FOR the grill, rather than adapted from a cheffy cookbook TO the grill. This is helpful for those of us who had to learn more about marinating and marinading and brushing... In addition to these virtues, the book contains recipes for said marinades etc. and dips and salads, which work for us year round. So it has ended up being a year-round kitchen reference book. And that is good.

About the Author

Eric Carle is an internationally bestselling and award-winning author and illustrator of more than seventy books for very young children, including The Tiny Seed, Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me, and his most well-known title, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Born in Syracuse, New York, Eric Carle moved to Germany with his parents when he was six years old. He studied at the prestigious art school, the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, in Stuttgart, before returning to the United States, where he worked as a graphic designer for the New York Times and later as art director for an advertising agency. The Very Hungry Caterpillar, now considered a modern classic, has sold nearly fifty million copies and has been translated into sixty-five languages. Pay attention to the product dimensions! I assumed this was the size of a typical hardcover children's picture book. It's not. The book itself is fine and I don't have a problem with anything other than I don't think it's made clear in the product description what you're actually ordering. When it says "hardcover," I would think most people assume it's an average-sized hardcover book, not a mini version of it. Just wanted people to be aware in case the size matters to you. In my case, it DID matter because I bought this for reading aloud to a large group of preschoolers, and they aren't going to be able to see the pictures very well because it's so small.

I am very disappointed in this product. The main attraction was the seed-embedded paper 'included' in the book......the paper was NOT included. I ordered 2 books for my grandchildren's birthdays to go with gardening items. It was going to be lots of fun to plant the seeds and watch them grow. I guess I'll have to go purchase seeds separately even though inside the front cover and on the back of the book it mentions the 'detachable' seed paper. Grammie Mc

It is a great visual for the life cycle of plants.Adapted for a ready-to-read, level two book, this Eric Carle classic will not only challenge children with developing reading skills but it also follows the journey of a seed from the time the autumn winds take it aloft until it lands and eventually sprouts into a mature plant. You'll love the bright, vibrant illustrations and descriptive text here. This is an excellent, joyful reader with a story that explains how plant seeds are spread and then grow into mature plants. Excellent!

The size of this book needs to be listed as part of the format choice. It states â€˜hardcoverâ€™. While it is hardcover, it is a shrunken down version containing minuscule font and pictures. The size is correctly listed in the description, but I, along with many other buyers, never thought to look because of how it was listed.

The story was cute, but I thought this was a board book!? That is how it was listed. This was actually only a hard covered book and the very thin pages ripped the first time reading it. The seeds that came with it was a cute touch. The book was smaller than I would have expected. I ended up giving this to an older child as my son is too young for this delicate book.

Iâ€™m using this in my Sunday school class room for fall planting. This book goes thru all seasons which covers all bases. Itâ€™s a little long for the younger age group I teach but they loved it.

This is a short book with cute drawings and the whole book is dedicated to the life of a tiny seed. Highly recommended for young kids!

It is incredibly TINY!! I never thought to look at the dimension thinking no such size and font could possibly exist to be legible!!! Also, I love the author and thought to add this to our collections.. but this story is too dark for a 3 and 5 year old from what I could make with a magnifying glass.
