I call this a book review, but after I purchased it, I realized it was a novella. Easy read I finished in less than a night. This is a tough review to write because there is so little to say about it. It's vanilla a best. The heroine witnesses a crime, and the criminals see her. They give chase, and she throws herself at a gentleman who, fortunately for her, is a gentleman. They have a budding romance in the course of 2 days on the train in his private car that is convoluted by all sorts of mistrust between both of them. He thinks she's a scam artist, and she's not ready to trust a man she just met.One of the criminals managed to get passage on the same train, and he forces the issues between them as he tries to kill the heroine.Pros1. The steamy scenes are good.2. I liked the hero. He's the white knight that is really my cup of tea. But there is so little to him. Not a lot of depth or character building, and I find that so odd as he was an Ohio farm boy that is now one of the richest men in America. It seems like there should be so much more to him.3. I never liked the heroine, but I never disliked her either.Cons1. The romance just wasn't all that believable to me. I guess falling for someone in two days does that, especially as I could see so little in common between the characters. There was no depth, no connection. But then that might be because the characters were rather flat.2. I liked the peripheral characters of the Webbers probably the best of anyone in the book. Especially Mrs. Webber. That says something.3. I didn't feel like the tension between the characters was all that believable. I can see where he'd think she was a scam artist, but the way he waffles on it back and forth - doesn't seem like the same man that would propose after knowing her for 2 days.4. Odd that she trusts the man enough to sleep in the same train car as him, but not enough to tell him the truth as to why she needs his help

Obviously at 102 pages this was a quick read, but regardless of the length, TYCOON was an excellent read and one I totally enjoyed. Starting it, I hadn’t realized that TYCOON was novella length but the writing was so crisp and dialogs so witty that I just immersed myself to enjoy a great story.Ted Harper was simply minding himself on a train platform when a beautiful young lady rushed up to embrace him and give him a smack on the cheek and talking a mile a minute so that he couldn’t get a word in edgewise!Clara Dawson, shop girl from a department store hadn’t been intending to board a train fleeing from New York but after witnessing her bosses murder by a notorious politician and his police bodyguard who would believe her!The chemistry between Ted the stranger, and Clara was great especially when he offered her a seat in his private car. He’s everything she ever desired even if a little stiff, but as a very nice bank clerk, she supposed that was how he should be. However as the danger slips in and Clara doesn’t tell him the truth of why she’s anxious to leave the city, Ted suspects she is just another female trying to ambush him into marriage. By the time he does come to believe her story, will it be too late to see her and lose the one female he has come to adore?Bottom Line: I loved this story, both characters, and great writing! Can’t wait to read more of the Knickerbocker Club!Marilyn Rondeau

Tycoon is the novella that kicks off The Knickerbocker Club series by Joanna Shupe. Set in New York City’s Gilded Age, we meet Ted Harper as he awaits his train at Grand Central Depot. As he stands alone on the platform he suddenly finds himself “staring down into the greenest eyes he’s ever seen”; the female owner of those eyes is holding onto his arm with a death grip while inanely babbling about him being her husband before kissing him in a most provocative manner. What had happened in the space of a split second? And how had he acquired s stunningly beautiful, opinionated, and talkative fake wife? Ted’s wariness is heightened when he realizes that his position as president of the New American Bank makes him an easy target; his concern grows when he learns the young woman, a department store clerk, is on the run and being pursued by a New York City policeman. Is the entire scenario a plot to blackmail him?Clara Dobson is indeed running away from the New York City authorities after witnessing a crime perpetrated by someone high up in New York politics. Her follows her instincts and flees the scene with nothing more than the clothes on her back. She latches onto the first decent looking man in Grand Central and prays to make her getaway undetected. Clara’s destination is St. Louis and the bosom of her family from whence she can regain her life. Her intentions are to repay her fake husband for her train ticket as she believes he is a hard-working executive traveling on an expense account. Neither Clara nor Ted expect to fall in love, but over the course of the three day train journey that’s exactly what happens. Will her family accept Ted as Clara’s fiancé? Will Ted’s equally wealthy and unattached friends (The Knickerbocker Club) believe him to have been railroaded into love? This start to The Knickerbocker Club series is concise and easily whets the reader’s appetite to learn about the powerful captains of New York City industry and the women who capture their hearts.
