The Nez Perce told these stories of Coyote (the creator) to set examples for the youth and explain the unknowable. Walker seems to have captured the Nez Perce style in English very well. None begin with "Once upon a time." Quite a few begin with "Coyote was going there."Coyote (before the people came there were "animal people") makes about every mistake of greed, dissimulation and disobedience that get humans in trouble, today.In one story Coyote and Fox (his only friend among the animal people) are camped by the river (maybe the Snake, Clearwater or Salmon) and Fox has a few magic words that can get salmon to jump out of the water at his feet. He supplies Coyote with fresh salmon every day as Coyote keeps asking for his secret. Once Fox relents and reveals the magic, Coyote repeats the words over and over, piling up a mountain of salmon which soon rot and stink. Coyote tries the incantation again, but there are no salmon left in the river.This is a rewarding glimpse into a rich, but different, culture that shows that people and their basic issues are the same, after all.
