"In retelling the-traditional tale, Corr skillfully weaves in traits associated with some of the animals. Corr's distinctive folk-art style gouache illustrations are fun, bright, and bold....a good choice for classroom read-alouds....A visually fun and vibrant retelling of the Chinese Zodiac." - School Library JournalThis is an easy introduction to the Chinese zodiac for young students. Recommended" - School Library Connection"In gorgeous naif artwork, we see the black-bearded emperor throwing his arms wide in his colorful robes, his tiered red headdress a visual echo of a nearby pagoda. Rat arrives first, having failed to wake his best friend, Cat, and having forded the river on the back of Ox. Ox wins second place, and so it goes, animal after animal, until Cat arrives, too late to make the zodiac and spitting mad. And that is why, children, through 'all the many years leading up to this day . . . rats have always fled from cats!'" - Wall Street Journal' A stunningly illustrated story of how the Chinese zodiac came to be' - Picture Book Blogger"Corr’s vignettes and spreads blaze with color, and his folk-art-style paintings give the figures sinuous contours and stylized eyes. Against backgrounds of contrasting colors, the animals seem to pop off the page." - Publishers Weekly"An animated introduction to Chinese culture and folklore, Christopher Corr’s The Great Race: Story of the Chinese Zodiac fuses bright colors and lively characters. The wise Jade Emperor’s plan to measure time motivates the entire animal kingdom to take action. This book tells a story of how the Chinese Zodiac was created. Although the illustrations are a bit simple and gaudy for my taste, I suspect most little ones will be fine with them. The text is well done and easy to follow. A fun introduction to another culture's holiday.Oddly, the description (as of my writing this) gives an age range of 8-12, but a grade level of preschool-1. Believe the grade level.I was provided a copy for review by the publisher, but have ordered a copy for a little one I know.
Beautiful illustrations and a wonderful first introduction to the story of the great race. It does not go into much detail about each animal, but it is perfect for the preschool-porbably 2nd grade.
This book is very cute but arrived in terrible shape. There was some weird white powder on it and the spine had been sliced. I threw it away.
What an adorable book.
A great book with drawing and story for kids and adults.
Cute story.
'The Great Race: The Story of the Chinese Zodiac' by Christopher Corr is a picture book showing how the Chinese zodiac years were determined. In a time before years or days, the Jade Emperor realize he doesn't know how old he is. He decides a contest is in order and calls for a race among the animals. The first 12 animals across the finish line will have a year named after them. Some of the animals start the race as friends and that changes. Others in kindness help their fellow animals. The pictures are colorful. The story is fine, except, I sometimes had a hard time reading black text over the illustrations. I wish that text boxes or alternating contrasting text would have been used.I received a review copy of this ebook from Quarto Publishing Group and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.
It's a big and colorful book but for the very young. I do wish the author would have given us a little more about the attributes of the animals? Occasionally there may be an obvious reference that makes sense, for example,A clever Rat, A kind Ox, a strong Tiger, lucky Rabbit and warm-hearted dragon. Most of the others get little mention or I just had trouble connecting the dots to their "gifts" aside from Goats eating A LOT and Monkeys steer well. The pages are big and colorful although the font seems unimaginative and hard to read sometimes.I suspect that the story of the Chinese Zodiac is a complicated tale rich in culture and peppered with folklore and would be hard to minimalize in a way that made too much sense. In this regard, the author did well. The young 2-year old that I read it to enjoyed the pictures and appreciated the crafty snake and the fact that the cat was mad at the rat.It is a fast read and a creative adult can easily use each animal page as an opportunity to teach a young person about each animal (even the warm-hearted dragon).I likened it to the Chinese Version of Old McDonald where the Emperor had some land, e-i-e-i-o.If you take out the Chinese Zodiac reference, this could be any simple children's book that would be more treasured and with encore requests, at bedtime, if there was something to engage more of a child's imagination. At this level, it's unmemorable. In conclusion, the author missed a great opportunity to bring a modicum of learning of the richness of Chinese culture, and the behavior traits of different animals through the often elaborate watercolor pages.
