Great guide for federal resumes. I work with transitioning service members and always recommend this book for help with federal resumes and applying on usajobs. Please note the previous version of this book is outdated and you will want the new resume format as it is shown in the 6th edition.
5e has much more detailed information, but it's now dated and some of it is incorrect (Resumix is no longer used, for example, but it's referenced in 5e).6e tried to be more "reader friendly" by drastically changing the layout, but it also "dumbed down" some of the information and deleted a huge amount of useful content. There are also numerous typos and formatting issues, but it's a pretty good resource for someone who's rusty and/or needs a tutorial on USAJobs Resume Builder.6e needs more examples of currently acceptable/recommended resume formats, and fewer examples of the old unacceptable formats. It also needs more examples of complete resumes, rather than just 1-2 pages of a resume.Do yourself a favor and find a used copy of 5e as well as the current version.
By reading (and re-reading) this book, and carefully following the instructions to create the HR preferred outline style resume with keywords matched to the federal job announcement, you will significantly improve your chances of being referred to hiring managers.The book guides you through the steps to identify critical key words and integrate them into your duty/responsibility and accomplishment statements. The sample resumes are very helpful and make it straightforward to adapt the format and structure into your resume, provided you are willing to put in the time and effort to write the resume you deserve.The book is an excellent value and will serve as a valuable reference throughout your career.
Do not buy the Kindle version of this book. It is completely unreadable on the Kindle. Microscopic print in a really light font. When you try to enlarge, the text doesn't fit all on one page so you can only read a few words of one sentence before you have to try and scroll to the side - then back and forth like this over and over. I can't comment on the content of the book because I couldn't even read one page.
This is a great resource to have when composing a Federal Resume. As an IT Security Specialist, I found the sample IT resume for a IT specialist (INFOSEC) outstanding. It reads well and things are easy to find to see how the candidate meets all the requirements. I particularly like the capitalized key words from the job announcement and the details coming afterward. I highly recommend this book to assist with building your Federal Resume. Good concept. It could use an update with a few more examples of current federal resumes. It reads easy, and it is organized well. For the price, it was a good purchase.
Very helpful in strengthening my resume however, I still don't have a job....
I am a fan of these books and am a resume writer but this one is nearly worthless. I bought it to be up to date. Dont buy it, but the 5th edition, that is where you will find useful info.
