Pros: I have been knitting about 3 years and avoiding socks as they looked too hard. I was intrigued that it might be possible to not only knit socks but two at a time! This book explains everything clearly with lots of pictures and diagrams along the way. Even without an experienced knitting buddy to help, I was able to create a pair of socks I would actually wear! The writer has a fun and organized style of writing, too, so it was enjoyable on that level too. I like the sample sock tutorial that leads the way to the rest of the patterns. The index of techniques and terms in the back were useful, if just to clarify her assumptions on how to approach something like, say, increases. (So many ways to do those, so few that work well in making socks!) Finally, the binding is such that the book lies flat when open. That's a small thing that is really nice.Caveats: Few to note. The techniques for casting on and getting the toes started must be practiced several times before yours will look as good as hers, but it's worth it to spend the time to get it right. After you master that, the rest seems doable.I highly recommend this book!
I learned to knit socks largely from this book, and it's very useful, and I'm grateful it was written. However, some of the instructions are contradictory and confusing. For example, in the heel where it instructs you when to wrap stitches, you wrap every OTHER stitch, not every stitch, yet subsequent instructions refer to the time when all the stitches but a certain number in the center have been wrapped! This made me frog and try again, thinking I had misunderstood the instructions, and wrapped every stitch and ended up with a very weird heel. Also, with the M1L increases, it doesn't say, and I had to figure it out elsewhere, that you should really knit through the back loop when you come to these or there will be holes.Lastly, it is not the most enabling book if you want to just knit generic socks two at a time, toe up, without particular patterns - like many knitting books, it gives you patterns and a sample, but it doesn't take you that last step and tell you how to do it yourself. For example, though it tells you how to calculate custom fitting, the one measurement you're on your own to figure out how to get is your number of gusset and heel rows. If she gave guidance on how to do that, you'd be able to do your own socks without patterns easily. She says she's figured it out for you in the patterns, and the number is different for each pattern, but what if you don't want to use the patterns? What if you just want the technique? The information can be found from other sources, with deep digging, but such things would take the book to that extra level of classic if they were there while you were learning.Still, I got so much out of this book. It's not a dud, it's just less than it could be. Hopefully future revisions or books by this author will be more comprehensive.
I don't often write reviews but felt compelled to do so for this book. Not only does this book have some wonderful patterns, it's a wealth of general sock knitting information. The explanations are well written & easy to follow. I've already made 2 pairs from book & now feel like I can adjust other patterns to get that perfect custom fit. Even if you don't like the process of two at a time, the toe up patterns & other information make this a must have.
I've been crocheting for decades but have just gotten into knitting in the last five years or so. Even though I was comfortable with knitting, I was afraid to tackle socks. This book changed that, it taught me how to make socks. And now I've made over two dozen pairs of socks for family, friends and myself. When starting, I think the most important thing to do is to make the practice socks she details in the instructions. By making those, I didn't feel so overwhelmed. And when I was finished, I was amazed that I'd actually made a pair of real socks! I did have problems with short rows though. I hadn't encountered them before so I was a bit lost. I "googled" short rows and saw a video of someone doing them and that helped me a lot. I realized the short row pictures in the book matched the video exactly but I just needed to see someone actually doing it to really understand. The pictures in the book are fantastic. The first couple of times I made socks, I kept referring to the pictures. Now when I make socks, I just skip to the parts where I need to refresh my memory. The formula she uses did give me a bit of a headache. I was so worried the socks wouldn't fit. Then I realized something. Socks stretch - a lot. Even if I don't have the formula perfectly, as long as I have foot circumference and length, the socks will fit. I've made multiple pairs of socks for lots people and using various yarns. All the socks fit. This is a great book. It took my knitting to another level and taught me a lot of great knitting techniques.
