Review
With her insight as an English professor and an appreciation for great decor (plus the right amount of humor), Harlan has crafted the perfect read for literary fiends and design junkies alike. (Laura Schocker Apartment Therapy)A masterful mash-up of highbrow literature and pervasive pop culture, this clever take on the classics will appeal to any book lover who can sheepishly admit their HGTV addiction. (Ken Fulk, Interior Designer and Creative Director)As someone who pauses during a novel’s steamy love scene to picture the gauzy bedding the author fleetingly mentions, I adored diving into Susan Harlan’s quirky and hilarious take on famous literary homes. So. Much. Fun. (Sherry Petersik Young House Love)Apartment Therapy for bookish types and the literary characters they love, Decorating a Room of One's Own is weird and wonderful fan fiction at its most elegant and evocative. (Maris Kreizman Slaughterhouse 90210)“Susan Harlan's revisionary take on rooms of one's own is a lively romp through literary history. In her version of Interior Decorating 101, she redesigns parlors and bedchambers with sardonic sophistication for literary heroes and heroines. Put down your class notes, and take a look at this!” (Sandra M. Gilbert Professor Emerita of English at the University of California, Davis)

This book is insanely good and beautifully illustrated. I ordered a second one for my best friend.
The author is has remarkable percipience of literature. Wickedly humorous.
Harlan has a fantastic wit. Every time I read a piece of this book, I smile.
Man, I loved this book. It's such a wonderful thing, to see a book that has a clear premise (what if we used Apartment Therapy speak to talk about homes from literature) and then executes it perfectly. Some of my favorite chapters were “Jay Gatsby’s Desperately Sad McMansion of UnFulfilled Dreams,†“Stella and Stanley’s Not Overly Welcoming New Orleans Walk-up,†and an interlude centering on a conversation of underwater living between Grendel’s Mother and the Sea Witch from the original fairy tale version of The Little Mermaid. The illustrations are LOVELY - truly striking. This is really my kind of coffee table book (although it's obviously much more as well) - people keep picking it up and commenting and I feel smart AND stylish :)
I loved this colorful, witty look back at all of my favorite literary characters. It was almost like fan fiction -- or reading a few pages from each one's diary! Harlan clearly took her time in researching her subjects and their various rooms, and I appreciated her intense attention to detail. SO many great references for the careful reader to find. A wonderful read!
I really enjoyed this book. I'm a former English major and I enjoyed the clever writing about literature, not to mention the witty take on each home. The illustrations are GORGEOUS. I plan to give this as gifts to my two cousins--one is a writer and one is an artist.
This book is as smart as it is laugh-out-loud funny. Harlan, a professor of literature, brings her deep knowledge of literary classics to the world of home decorating, and reimagines our favorite literary characters as the interior designers of their fabled homes. Witty, playful and hilarious, it also manages to glean sharp insights into our favorite, old tales: a fresh read of Pippy Longstocking through Harlan’s satiric imaginings, for example, brings to light the colonialist underpinnings of Pippi’s wild circumstances. It’s a really smart book for people who love books.
I loved this book. It was perfect. I caught myself snort-laughing on some of the lines. I loved the author's sense of humor and hope like heck there is a Decorating A Room of One's Own - Part Two someday. :)
